Ninth World Hindi Conference
22-24 September, 2012
Johannesburg [South Africa]
http://vishwahindisammelan.gov.in/
The Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India with the support of Hindi Shiksha Sangh, South Africa and other stakeholders is organizing the Ninth World Hindi Conference (WHC) in Johannesburg, South Africa from 22-24 September, 2012. The Conference will be held at the Sandton Convention Centre, 2nd Floor, Maude Street, Sandton-2196, Johannesburg, South Africa.
The tradition of the World Hindi Conferences began with the first conference having been organized in Nagpur in the year 1975. Since then, these conferences have achieved a global profile and momentum of their own. The subsequent eight World Hindi Conferences were organized in different world cities, namely, twice in Port Louis (Mauritius), twice in India, Port of Spain (Trinidad and Tobago), London (UK), Paramaribo (Suriname) and New York (USA). All these conferences have always attracted a galaxy of renowned scholars and followers of Hindi. In keeping with this growing reach and popularity of this event, the Government has decided to organize the next conference in Johannesburg, South Africa, which would also be an apt recognition of India's historic, close and growing ties with the whole of the African continent. South Africa also carries the profound memories of Mahatma Gandhi's association with that region.
The 9th World Hindi Conference would deliberate on a series of traditional and contemporary themes related with both classical and modern aspects of Hindi. The theme of the conference this year will be "Bhasha ki Asmita Aur Hindi Ka Vaishvik Sandarbh". The conference would also have nine academic sessions on such subjects as Mahatma Gandhi's linguistic vision; Hindi and modern technology; role of Indian epics in propagation of Hindi; contribution of foreign scholars in dissemination of Hindi; Mass media and Hindi, etc.
The main theme of the conference is "Bhasha Ki Asmita Aur Hindi Ka Vaishvik Sandarbh".
Detailed information about the content and structure of the conference as well as instructions for registration are available at http://vishwahindisammelan.gov.in/

Sestri Ponente Shipyard launched the second of two Indian Fleet Tankers, INS Shakti, in Genoa, Italy
The Sestri Ponente shipyard of Fincantieri, on Ocrober 11, 2010, launched INS Shakti at a colourful ceremony in Genoa. The name of the tanker means power or strength. It is being built by Fincantieri under a contract signed in April 2008, valued at about Euro 300 million. The contract includes two vessels. INS Deepak, the first of the two Fleet Tankers of the Indian Navy to be designed and built in Italy, is at an advanced stage of trials preceding delivery to the Indian Navy. It is scheduled for delivery in India at the end of this year, on completion of the trials.
The second Fleet Tanker, INS Shakti, is being built at the Sestri Ponente shipyard, using many modern and state of the art ship building methods and concepts, with advanced outfitting. It is expected to be delivered within 2 years. The trials of INS Shakti will start in December 2010. Its delivery and commissioning in India is expected to take place in the middle of 2011.
INS Shakti was launched with the recitation of Vedic hymns by the Warship Production Superintendent in Italy with the breaking of a coconut by Mrs Homai Saha, wife of Ambassador Debabrata Saha, the Chief Guest on the occasion. In keeping with Italian tradition, a bottle of champagne was also broken at the ship's bow by Mrs. Saha, who, following the tradition of our navy, would be the God Mother of the ship.
The Fleet Tankers would be the first warships in Indian waters made by Fincantieri, the premiere shipbuilder in Europe. The ships are in double hull configuration, which provides greater safety against accidental oil spillages, in accordance with latest MARPOL regulations.

Message by H.E. Mr. Rajiv Dogra, Ambassador of India in Italy on the publication "Mazzini & Mahatma"
Among the tributes to Mahatma Gandhi upon his death were these words by Albert Einstein:
"Generations to come will scarce believe that such a one as this walked the earth in flesh and blood."
Giuseppe Mazzini in 19th Century and Mahatma Gandhi in 20th Century moulded the destinies of their people with ideas, idealism and inspiration. It is, therefore, fitting that we should be celebrating and saluting these two great men who were larger than life in their lifetimes and whose examples continue to inspire us in the 21st century.
I am glad that the people of Italy and India have joined together in this endeavour to place a statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Genoa, the land of birth of Giuseppe Mazzini. This is most appropriate, because for centuries our two countries have represented a marvelous tradition for tolerance, respect for civil liberties and excellence in culture.
Both Giuseppe Mazzini and Mahatma Gandhi had special places in their hearts for the young of the world. "Young Italy" and "Young India" were their legacies in two different ages and to two different nations. It is, therefore, fitting that their messages should be contained in a publication that aims to reach out to all those who are young in spirit, mind and their actions. I am sure this effort of the Embassy of India in Rome and the city of Genoa will provide some new perspectives about the lives and the messages of these two great men whose contributions have made such a profound and positive difference to the world.

PRESS RELEASE
Ministry of External Affairs
External Publicity Division
WORLD HINDI CONFERENCE
The VII World Hindi Conference is being organized in Suriname by a group of Indo-Surinamers comprising of Vishwa Hindu Parisad, Mata Gauri Foundation, Sanatan Dharm Maha Sabha, Arya Dewakar, GOPIO and other associated organizations of Suriname with joint efforts of our Mission at Paramaribo from 5th to 9th June, 2003 with assistance from both the Governments of India and Suriname.
It was decided to organize VII World Hindi Conference in Suriname as it has a very large population of Indian origin. The purpose of holding international Hindi Conference is to strengthen linkages with people of Indian origin abroad especially those that are Hindi-speaking, draw the Indian Diaspora into cultural events that they can relate to, use cultural diplomacy as a tool and make a gesture to communities of Indian origin concentrated in specific regions of the World Besides, Suriname is probably the only Caribbean country, which has maintained linguistic heritage. There is active support of Indian Community and the Government of Suriname is in favour of holding World Hindi Conference in Suriname.
So far, six World Hindi Conferences have been held at Nagpur (India), Mauritius, New Delhi (India), Mauritius, Trinidad and Tobago and London.
Holding the 7th World Hindi Conference on 5th June has a symbolic significance and seems very appropriate. It was the date in 1873 when Indians first landed in Suriname.
Suriname, like Guyana, Mauritius, Fiji and Trinidad and Tobago has a large population of Indian immigrants who went to these countries as indentured labour to work in Sugarcane fields during the last century. Most of them stayed back adapting to the Country of their settlement as their homeland. They have strived to keep up their culture and language appropriately. The theme of the conference is "Hindi in the Diaspora", highlighting the function of Hindi as a link between these countries and other countries where there are large number of Indian settlers, in the common goal of preserving the cultural heritage.
Prominent Hindi scholars from all over the world will be honoured during the conference.
The scholars who wish to read their articles in the conference are requested to send the extracts of their articles duly typed to:
Shri Ravi Thapar, The Head of Chancery, Embassy of India, 10, Rode Kruislaan, Post Box No.1329, Paramaribo, Suriname, Telephone 00-597-498344, Fax number 00-597-491106, E-mail: ambindia@sr.net, india@sr.net
